Giovanni Bertacchi Refuge
The Heart of the Alps at 2,200 metres

Traditional dishes from Chiavenna and Lombardy, with some specialities and interpretations
The refuge is situated at an altitude of 2,200 meters on the Alpe Emet, near the lake of the same name and the corresponding pass. Positioned on a rise, it overlooks the Madesimo valley, offering a 360-degree panorama that encompasses the mountains of the Upper Valle Spluga and the first Swiss foothills beyond the Emet pass. The pass can be reached in just 30 minutes from the refuge, providing a stunning view over the Val Niemet. The Bertacchi refuge can be accessed via two paths: one trail starts from Macolini, a hamlet of Madesimo, with an elevation gain of 600 meters and a travel time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The other trail originates from the shores of Lake Montespluga, accessible by continuing on state road 36 towards the hamlet of Montespluga and the Spluga Pass, from a well-marked parking area in the Suretta locality, featuring 300 meters of elevation gain for a 1 hour and 15-minute trek. Both trails are accessible even to the less experienced, although the first is more challenging and the second more technical. This allows families with children to reach the refuge without difficulty.
The refuge offers dishes from the Chiavenna and Lombard traditions, with some specialties and interpretations. It also provides the option to dine outdoors, so guests can enjoy their meals against a spectacular backdrop of peaks, valleys, and Alpine scenery. The connection with the surrounding environment is also reflected in the choice of fresh and local ingredients, helping to create a unique and authentic atmosphere. However, the real gem remains the panorama. To fully enjoy the varying impressions of the landscape at every moment of the day, it is recommended to stay overnight in the common dormitory, bringing along a
personal sheet sleeping bag or sleeping bag.
